The Data Center at the National Institute of Technology, Raipur represents a major step forward in strengthening the institute’s digital and technological capabilities. It has been conceptualized and developed as a centralized, secure, and high-availability facility that forms the foundation of all critical IT services across the campus. In today’s academic and research environment, where digital platforms are integral to learning, administration, and innovation, this data center acts as the nerve center of NIT Raipur’s digital ecosystem.
The primary objective of establishing this data center is to provide a reliable and scalable infrastructure that can support academic teaching, advanced research, and day-to-day administrative operations. By centralizing computing and networking resources, the institute ensures better performance, enhanced data security, streamlined management, and improved service availability. The data center is also aligned with national initiatives promoting digital governance and smart campuses, thereby positioning NIT Raipur as a technologically progressive institution.
Importantly, the data center has been designed with a future-oriented vision. It is intended to support emerging areas of education and research such as cloud computing, big data analytics, Internet of Things, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. These technologies demand robust computing power, high-speed networking, and reliable storage systems—all of which can be enabled by this facility. Through this infrastructure, NIT Raipur aims to empower students, faculty, and researchers with hands-on exposure to real-world digital environments.
The data center is structured into multiple specialized rooms, each carefully planned to fulfill specific operational, safety, and performance requirements. This modular design ensures efficiency, scalability, and ease of maintenance.
At the heart of the facility lies the Server Room, which accommodates sixteen server racks arranged in a single, organized row. Each rack is designed to support a power load of approximately 5 kilowatts, making them suitable for a wide range of applications, including application servers, database servers, storage systems, and virtualization platforms. The low-power rack design promotes energy efficiency while still providing sufficient capacity for institutional needs. The layout also ensures proper airflow management, effective cooling, and easy access for maintenance and upgrades. At least 5 racks have been planned for hosting the Institute’s server at initial phase.
Supporting the server infrastructure is the Network Room, which houses four dedicated network racks. These racks contain core and distribution networking equipment such as switches, routers, firewalls, and network security appliances. Together, they form the backbone of the institute’s digital connectivity, enabling seamless communication between servers, campus networks, internet gateways, and cloud platforms. This centralized networking setup improves performance, reduces latency, and enhances overall network reliability.
Uninterrupted power supply is critical for any data center, and NIT Raipur’s facility has been designed with strong redundancy and reliability in mind. The UPS Room is equipped with a 120 kVA UPS system configured with N+1 redundancy to support all ICT equipment. This means that even if one UPS module fails, the remaining modules can continue supplying power without disruption. Additionally, a separate 10 kVA UPS system with N+1 redundancy is dedicated to non-IT auxiliary systems such as access control, surveillance cameras, and monitoring equipment.
The LT Panel Room plays a vital role in managing electrical distribution throughout the data center. It houses multiple electrical panels responsible for handling raw power input, UPS-backed power output, stabilizers, and auxiliary electrical systems. This room ensures safe power routing, load balancing, and protection against electrical faults, thereby safeguarding both equipment and personnel.
Closely associated with the UPS infrastructure is the Battery Room, which contains the battery banks that provide backup power during short-duration outages or power fluctuations. This room is also equipped with an integrated fire suppression system and a fire control panel, ensuring rapid response in case of overheating, electrical faults, or fire-related incidents. Safety considerations in this area are critical due to the high energy density of battery systems.
Continuous monitoring and proactive management are essential for reliable data center operations. The Network Operations Center (NOC) serves as the command and control hub of the facility. From this room, trained personnel can monitor server performance, network traffic, power status, and environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity on a 24x7 basis. The NOC enables quick identification and resolution of issues, minimizing downtime and ensuring uninterrupted services.
The NOC is also integrated with the Access Control System and CCTV surveillance, which regulate and monitor physical access to sensitive areas of the data center. Only authorized personnel are allowed entry, ensuring data security and compliance with best practices for critical infrastructure protection.
The Safety Operations Room is designed to support external operational activities, particularly during emergencies such as electrical failures or fire incidents. This room also serves as a controlled space for pre-installation inspection, testing, and staging of servers and IT equipment before they are moved into the live server environment. This reduces risks and ensures smooth deployment processes.
For extended power outages, the facility is supported by a Diesel Generator Shed housing 200 kVA generators configured with N+1 redundancy. These generators, along with Automatic Mains Failure (AMF) panels, automatically start and take over the power load when grid power fails. This ensures that critical systems remain operational even during prolonged outages.
Recognizing the need for long-term scalability, the data center includes a dedicated Future Expansion Hall. This area is reserved for the installation of additional server racks as computing demand grows. It also allows for the expansion of power systems, UPS capacity, and cooling infrastructure without major structural changes. This forward-looking approach ensures that the data center can evolve in line with institutional growth and technological advancements.
As of now, the physical infrastructure of the data center is largely complete. Server racks, power distribution systems, UPS units, cooling systems, monitoring tools, and security installations are already in place. Only minor maintenance and finishing activities are required before the facility becomes fully operational.
The deployment of IT systems, including servers, storage, and networking equipment, is planned to be carried out in a phased manner. This approach allows the institute to align investments with actual usage requirements. Each server rack currently operates at a relatively low power density of around 5 kilowatts, making the initial setup energy-efficient and cost-effective.
Once fully operational, the NIT Raipur Data Center will support a wide range of institutional services and initiatives. These include academic IT services such as learning management systems, online examination platforms, management information systems, and research computing environments.
The data center will also host centralized e-governance and administrative applications, enabling digital workflows for admissions, finance, human resources, and campus management. Private cloud infrastructure and virtualization platforms will provide flexible computing resources for departments, research groups, and student projects.
In addition, the facility will support big data analytics, cybersecurity operations, and digital content delivery systems. It will act as the backbone for IoT-based campus solutions and advanced AI and machine learning laboratories, enabling experimentation, innovation, and interdisciplinary research.
With the provision of the Future Expansion Hall, the data center is well-positioned to scale its capabilities by adding more server racks, enhancing UPS capacity, and upgrading cooling systems. This ensures that the facility remains resilient, adaptable, and capable of meeting NIT Raipur’s long-term digital transformation goals.
